Pedodontics

Pediatric Dentistry (Pedodontics) is the branch of Dentistry that deals with the oral health of children and adolescents. The purpose of Pedodontics is to treat teeth and educate children and parents on oral hygiene and eating habits to adopt to prevent the onset of tooth decay.

It is often essential to take care of baby teeth, even though they must be replaced by permanent teeth. Their destruction due to decay or early loss – in addition to causing suffering to the child – can cause more serious problems, such as defects in the alignment of permanent teeth.

Cavity Prevention for Children
In those at high risk of caries, the chewing surface of the molars can be sealed with composite resins, making it smooth and easy to clean. This reduces the accumulation of plaque in the grooves and pits of the molars, where most caries in children originates.

When to make the first visit
Ideally, the child should visit the pediatric dentist as early as 1 year of age. Having the first visit to the pediatric dentist is important to build a relationship between the child and the dentist that is based on trust and comfort for future visits. It is advisable that the child's first meeting with the dentist does not coincide with the need to perform a treatment, when there is toothache or when a trauma occurs, in order to avoid the figure of the dentist being linked to a negative experience.
After the first visit, children will need to be checked by the pediatric dentist every 6 or 12 months in order to monitor oral hygiene, diet and the harmonious development of the entire mouth.
